Especially in the US, I feel as if professional athletes dwell in the bright spotlight of the media so often….almost too often, in some ways. As a result, children look up to them as role models and mimic their actions, behaviors and lives. Even we as adults do the same. Fortunately or unfortunately, our society is structured in such a way that the professional athlete can and is a major influence upon our lives.
Because of this, professional athletes have a huge responsibility and opportunity. They are presented with an elevated platform, by which they can choose to showcase a positive lifestyle, set of core values and morals. All too often though, they deny this opportunity and showcase lives of trouble, tumult, greed and pain. For that reason, I love seeing athletes who present themselves as positive role models with defined values, lives focused on helping others and a dedicated commitment to sharing their wealth.
We also find many athletes who share their deeply rooted Christian faith – either through their outspoken witness or consistent action on and off the field. If you’ve read my blog before, you may have read my posts about Tim Tebow. [If you missed them - check out my December 7, 2011 post or January 10, 2012 post]. I really enjoy his witness and use of his talent to share the Gospel – it is truly inspiring.
So today, I’m excited to share an interview with New York Yankee and all-star professional baseball player, Mark Teixeira. He is another athlete who is a great role model. He is a humble yet confident witness to Christ – one who conveys the Christian life through consistent action and in truth each and every day. He’s also a darn good baseball player and person. It’s really cool to see people like this committing their lives to showcase the love of God! I really enjoyed watching this interview with him and I hope you do too. Here it is, check it out:
